How Sessions Work With Autistic-Thoughts

What is the difference between your counselling and your mentorship sessions?

Simply put, a counselling session is run by a qualified counsellor. This means they have a specialist qualification and are registered to practise as a full counsellor. They’ll be able to give advice that is more specialist and focused on trauma work and recovery.

A mentorship is run by one of our mentors. Although they are not counsellors or psychologists, we exclusively recruit mentors who are specialists in Neurodivergency and Neurodivergent themselves. All our mentors have plenty of experience offering practical advice and support to autistic clients.

Whether you choose counselling or mentorship is up to you. Generally, we suggest that you book a free initial consultation to discuss your options.

Contact us here if you’re not sure and we’ll help you find the best fit for you!

I don’t live in the UK. Can I still book a mentorship with Autistic-Thoughts?

You certainly can; location is no barrier and we have mentees who benefit from our services all over the globe.

Sessions are usually held on Zoom, so as long as you have a web connection, we can find a suitable slot for you that will take different time zones into account. We can take payment using Paypal, Stripe or direct bank transfers from most countries, so it doesn’t matter where you are in the world.

And, although our team are mostly UK-based, they’ve worked with clients from a range of different backgrounds. They’ll do their utmost to understand any cultural differences that will need to be factored in.

How will I pay for my sessions?

You can pay via bank transfer, Paypal or Stripe from most countries. In the case of counselling or mentorships, your payment will be invoiced to you after each session; in the case of assessments, you’ll be invoiced three times throughout the process.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your personal situation and what your goals are. Some people only need a few sessions in order to organise their heads, find a new job, etc,  and others choose to keep taking sessions over a long period of time. Whatever your needs are, we are here to help.

There’s no need to commit or decide to a set number upfront – you can make decisions about how long you would like to continue once you’ve got a clearer idea of how your sessions are going

Where are you based? Do we need to travel to sessions for mentoring?

All our sessions are held online, so there’s no need for you to worry about the cost of travel, making journeys, or having to go to a strange new place. Although we are based in England and have 2 in-person locations (Sheffield and Suffolk) if you’d prefer to explore that option.

Will my sessions be online and how can I access them?

Yes! Our services are held online, via Zoom (except for child diagnosis under 10y please contact us if this is the service you’re looking to explore). We find this is the best platform for our sessions. Please let us know if you have any additional requirements or preferences to help your online sessions run smoothly and comfortably.

How often will I need to speak to my mentor or counsellor?
It’s best to take the sessions at a pace that suits you.

Generally, our clients tend to book their sessions weekly, but we encourage you to find a pattern that works for you. Sessions can be booked directly with your professional or through one of our calendar links. Whatever makes your life easier!
Can I speak to somebody first or have a trial session before I commit to paid sessions?

Of course! We offer all our clients a free initial consultation to speak to a member of our team and see if what we can offer will be a good fit for you.

We’ll only book future sessions once you’re 100% comfortable and sure you want to proceed.

How do you know we’ll definitely be a good fit to work together?
We are adaptable and experienced at helping all sorts of clients.

Whether you’re an autistic individual or booking sessions as part of a family or group, as long as you are open to the process and are ready to grow and learn, we’re confident we’ll be able to assist.

In the event that we aren’t quite the right fit, there’d be no obligation to book future sessions and we will do our best to help direct you towards another service or resource that might be a better fit for you.

FAQs about 1:1 Sessions

I have additional communication needs or require extra help with setting up my mentorship. Can you help?
We’ll do all that we can to support your communication needs! Please let us know if use any type of sign language or communication support and we will be happy to make suitable arrangements.
I’m feeling nervous or uncertain. How can I tell if Autistic-Thoughts will be a good fit for me?

It’s completely normal to feel nervous. In fact, it’s usually a sign that you’re on the right path – because growing and developing are all about stepping out of your comfort zone.

If you’re still not sure, try asking yourself these questions…

  • Are you an autistic person who feels ready to truly get to know your authentic self?
  • Do you have specific goals in mind or struggles you’d like to overcome, but you’re not quite sure where to begin?
  • Do you believe you’d benefit from having a supportive Neurodivergent professional and mentoring figure in your life to give clear advice and encouragement?

If you answered yes to these, then we’re confident that Autistic-Thoughts will be the perfect fit for you!

I suspect I might be autistic, but I’m not sure. Can I still book a session with Autistic-Thoughts?
Yes! We support self-diagnosed autistic clients if we are able to genuinely help them. And we can also provide an assessment and diagnosis package if you would like one.
I want some support but I’m not sure what type of service I should book. How should I choose?

You can read our service descriptions here to read the details.

If you’re still not sure, we’d love to help you find the perfect fit. Drop us a message here and we can discuss your needs and help you book a free initial consultation.

FAQs for Family Members and Caregivers of Autistic People

My child doesn’t have an official diagnosis, but we suspect they are autistic. Can you help?

Yes! We offer assessment services which will cover the full diagnosis process. We also offer parent mentorship sessions that could help you decide what’s the best option for your child. There’s one for children (under 18s) and one for adults.

Do both me and my son/daughter have to attend the sessions?
It depends from family to family and on what you would like to discuss.

Our group counselling and mentoring sessions are usually designed for the child to attend with other family members. If your son/daughter is an older child or a teenager, they might well benefit from being included.

However, in some scenarios it might be more appropriate for you to have a 1:1 session with us, or to have a mixture of group and individual sessions over time.

As always, we tailor our services to provide exactly what your family needs, so there’s no one-size-fits-all option. Contact us or book a free initial consultation if you’d like to discuss your needs in more detail.

My child is still very young, or is pre-verbal. Will it be harder to have a successful mentorship if they can’t verbally communicate right now?

Not at all! Good, healthy communication doesn’t always have to involve spoken words and all our professionals have been trained to take this into consideration. A lot of us have trained in Makaton as well.

We would love to help you discover the best ways to communicate and build strong, healthy bonds with your autistic child, whatever age or life stage they are at.
